Middle East Group

This course will examine a variety of issues relating to the wider Middle East from earliest to modern times. The first talks will start with an introduction to the Middle East. Then our talks will take listeners into Central Asia, India and China; then venture into Africa, and north to Russia, as well as the fictional world of the Arabian Nights. Present-day issues will not be forgotten as this course will provide a wonderful opportunity to discuss many important issues about fascinating places.

Organisation: Each two-hour session consists of a talk in-person and on Zoom, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion in a relaxed atmosphere and with a break for refreshments. Suggestions for supplementary reading will also be available for anyone interested in pursuing the topics in more depth.

Course leaders: Paul and Janet are experts on the Middle East, have published extensively on the region, and still travel widely. Sometimes other specialists will provide additional insights into a particular topic. On other occasions, we will show and discuss short films on relevant themes. No prior knowledge is needed, though we welcome input from those who know the regions and/or subjects.
