Classical Studies

U3a Classical Studies

The Classical Studies group meets twice a month (on the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesdays
from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.). Each meeting on the first Tuesday of the month is a
beginner’s course in classical Greek. Each meeting on the third Tuesday of the
month is an intermediate course in Latin. Those enrolled for Classical Studies
can either attend both the Greek and Latin classes or only Greek or Latin.
Classical Greek: We use a textbook written for adult learners, which provides
an introduction to Greek grammar which facilitates translating from classical
Greek to English. We look at the place of Greek in the indo-European family of
languages and relationships between Greek and English. We also stretch
ourselves by translating a short passage from Homer’s Odyssey into English.
Latin: We are using Bk 4 of the Cambridge Latin Course, which looks at Rome
during the latter part of the 1 st century AD through interesting Latin texts,
which introduce new grammatical features. We also translate original texts
from Ovid and the Roman satirists into English and discuss their influence on
European art and literature.

Group leader: John Landon

Location: Southfield Community Centre Duns

Day and time: 1st and 3rd Tuesday 2pm to 4pm

Latin starts 15/09/26 and Greek starts 6th October
